Colleges and universities have rules and regulations in place for a reason. Although some of them are undoubtedly annoying, most school policies make sense. Don’t cheat, don’t lie, respect others, follow state and federal laws, don’t light candles in your dorm … the usual. Officials want students to have a good college experience and stay safe on campus.

A few schools have rules that would probably be considered incredibly strict by most people that are reading this. Some folks feel that “Rules were made to be broken!” but they’d better think twice if they plan on attending any of these schools!

Bob Jones University

is a private fundamental Christian university located in Greenville, South Carolina. The following rules and regulations were taken from the

Men

• Hair is to be neat and professional (not tangled or spiked); fauxhawks are not appropriate. It should be a natural color.

• Sideburns should be no lower than the lower opening of the ear.

• Men are expected to remain clean-shaven.

• Necklaces, earrings, bracelets and tattoos are not appropriate.

Women

• Sleeves are required.

• Necklines may come no lower than four fingers below the collarbone.

• Jeans may be worn in and between women’s residence halls and when participating in activities, such as skiing and ice-skating.

• Clothing should be loose enough to conceal undergarment lines and not to draw attention to the figure.

• Hose are to be worn whenever men students are required to wear a coat and tie.

All Students

• Abercrombie & Fitch and its subsidiary Hollister have shown an unusual degree of antagonism to biblical morality. Therefore, BJU asks its students not to patronize these stores, wear their clothing or display articles containing their names or logos.

• Students are to be in their own rooms and quiet at 11 p.m. All lights are to be out by midnight.

• Students are required to keep their rooms clean and neat. Rooms are inspected daily.

• For the sake of accountability, students must “check out” when they leave the campus. Students gradually acquire more freedom in this area as they become upperclassmen and demonstrate trustworthiness.

Brigham Young University

is a private research university owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Provo, Utah. The following rules and regulations were taken from the

Men

• A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained.

• Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, revealing, or form fitting.

• Shorts must be knee-length or longer.

• Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extreme styles or colors, and trimmed above the collar, leaving the ear uncovered.

• Sideburns should not extend below the earlobe or onto the cheek.

• If worn, moustaches should be neatly trimmed and may not extend beyond or below the corners of the mouth.

• Men are expected to be clean-shaven; beards are not acceptable.

Women

• A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained.

• Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, strapless, backless, or revealing; has slits above the knee; or is form fitting.

• Dresses, skirts, and shorts must be knee-length or longer.

• Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extremes in styles or colors.

• Excessive ear piercing (more than one per ear) and all other body piercing are not acceptable.

All Students

• Students must abstain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal substances and from the intentional misuse or abuse of any substance.

• Visitors of the opposite sex are permitted in living rooms and kitchens but not in the bedrooms in off-campus living units.

• The use of the bathroom areas by members of the opposite sex is not appropriate unless emergency or civility dictates otherwise, and then only if the safety, privacy, and sensitivity of other residents are not jeopardized.

• Mixed gender overnight camping trips are not encouraged and are not authorized.

Oral Roberts University

is a private charismatic Christian university in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The following rules and regulations were taken from the

Men

• Makeup (fingernail polish, eye shadow, lipstick, etc.) is not acceptable for male students.

• T-shirts must be worn to and from the sunbathing areas. Bathing suits are not acceptable attire for sunbathing.

• Shorts (Bermuda style only, no less than 4 inches above the knee, no athletic shorts) are permitted only in the cafeteria.

Women

• The length of all pants should be mid-calf or lower.

• Knit shirts, blouses, or nonathletic shirts must be modest and in good taste, not revealing or sheer, with no cleavage showing.

• All straps, whether on a dress or shirt, must be at least one inch wide.

All Students

• Students are strictly prohibited from engaging in any business activity or enterprise on campus for personal or private gain.

• Chapel absences resulting from an emergency or illness must have an excuse submitted within 48 hours to the appropriate office on official letterhead or documentation.

Liberty University

is a private Evangelical Christian university in Lynchburg, Virginia. The following rules and regulations were taken from the page of the school’s website.

• Any noise from a room (including music and television), which can be heard in the hallway, will be considered too loud and a noise violation may be issued.

• Bicycles may not be kept in any residence building unless placed under the student’s bed or between the student’s bed and the wall. They should be placed in such a way as to not interfere with exiting the room and not cause damage to the room or its furnishings.

• No one is permitted to do laundry after curfew.

• Current policy for movie viewing allows for attendance at theaters but prohibits viewing of movies rated “R”, “NC-17” or “X”.

• NO pets are allowed in the residence halls. Fish and hermit crabs are the only exception.

• No road, traffic, or office signs may be displayed or stored in the residence halls.
